As we celebrate Juneteenth, take time to reflect on the power of freedom, not only in our nation's history but also in our personal lives as followers of Christ. The story of Juneteenth, which commemorates the final act of freeing slaves in America on June 19, 1865, reminds us that true freedom is a journey, not just a destination.
One of the most inspiring stories of Juneteenth is that of Ottis Flake and his daughter Opal Lee. In 1939, Ottis and his family faced racism and violence when a mob set fire to their home in Fort Worth, Texas, on June 19. This happened right down the street from my son Brandon's new church building in the Historic Southside.
Despite the trauma, Opal persevered, becoming an educator and a champion for Juneteenth celebrations across the state. Opal's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of embracing one's true identity.
As men of God, we too are called to rise above the challenges and limitations that the world places on us and to live out our God-given purpose with courage and conviction.
When we anchor our identity in Christ, we find the freedom to live as He intended – with purpose, passion, and a commitment to making a difference in the world. We become part of a greater story, one that transcends our individual experiences and connects us to a legacy of faith and perseverance.
As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us also celebrate the freedom we have in Christ. Embrace your true identity as a son of God and live out your life with the tenacity, strength, wisdom, and perseverance that Opal Lee demonstrated.
Be the man who rises up as a faithful servant, bringing the love and freedom of Christ to every man in every nation.
